Pathogenic bacteria
have many selective pressures but one of the most important is antibiotics. Since
the discovery of antibiotic compounds the seriousness of a bacterial infection
has decreased to the point that most people recover from what is making them
sick. We have heard of people getting one infection or another and having to
have amputations because it destroys the tissue or dying from the infection but
these are extraordinary circumstances. The use of antibiotics has made bacteria
that have resistance to the drug better able to survive and the resistance has
been spreading for years. We now have MRSA and VRE among the resistant
infections we can acquire. Usually we think that resistance spreads by the
spread of the bacteria or bacteria sharing genetic material. Omar M. El-Halfawy, and Miguel A. Valvano
showed another way that bacteria can share resistance in Chemical Communication of Antibiotic Resistance by a Highly Resistant
Subpopulation of Bacterial Cells. In the article they show that when there
is a mix of highly resistant bacteria and bacteria with less or no resistance
that the resistance can be communicated to the entire population. The way that
the resistance is communicated is the resistant bacteria excrete a chemical
that inactivates the antibiotic and in doing so makes the entire colony
resistant to the drug.
I thought a way a bacteria became resistant was the mutation over time from being exposed to an antibiotic, or something along those lines. I didn't know that the resistance could be transferred to another bacteria with no resistance. What kind of chemical is released? And could this effect all kinds of bacteria or just the ones of similar genetic makeup? For example, if a patient had 2 different kinds of bacterial infection, one is resistant to an antibiotic but the other one is not, could it become resistant eventually if exposed long enough?

Wow! So bacteria look out for each other. Resistant bacteria can save the little guys. So if we could figure out a way to counter act the enzyme resistant bacteria produce, we might be able to end the war on bacteria! Or at least get rid of some of the bacteria. The resistant bacteria would still be resistant but maybe the infection will not be as severe. Do you know which bacteria do this? This very interesting.
ReplyDeleteIf i understand the article correctly the chemical is an inhibitor for the antibiotic and that the resistance can work for any bacteria close to the resistant bacteria
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting. Communicating the resistance is an interesting topic to wrap your mind around. Another possibility is that the resistance is not communicating, but that the resistant bacteria just offer the umbrella of their protection to the surround lesser-resistant bacteria, allowing the similar bacteria to proliferate at a greater rate. IS there any way to prove that the bacteria have actually retained the resistance?
